The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development clearly states that disability cannot be a reason or criteria for lack of access to development programming and the realization of human rights. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework includes seven targets which explicitly refer to persons with disabilities, and six further targets on persons in vulnerable situations, which include persons with disabilities.

Fear of leprosy--contemporary and historical--has caused villages and families to shun those affected, leading to an obvious reluctance by those afflicted to identify themselves. Yet, if untreated, progressive and permanent damage to the skin, nerves, limbs and eyes may result. (2)

A leprosy elimination target, set by the World Health Assembly, aimed to eradicate leprosy as a public health problem by the year 2000. Today, India is one of five countries that still need to reach this target, but in one little corner of India it has already been achieved.

Built in 1955, Karigiri was initially a remote, barren patch of land provided by the Indian government specifically for the treatment of leprosy patients. Karigiri's subsequent collaboration in a leprosy control programme with the Indian Government, World Health Organisation (WHO) and International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Associations (ILEP), brought down the prevalence of leprosy from 250:10,000 to less than 1:10,000 in 2006 (1) (thus achieving the leprosy elimination target).

Coal mining practices in Meghalaya are still primitive. Inhabited by indigenous tribes, this small state in northeastern India, between Bangladesh and Myanmar, is home to thousands of private mines. They employ young boys who are slim enough to squeeze into the deep, narrow tunnels and extract the coal with rudimentary tools.
