...Evidence for nonautonomous deleterious expression of SCE1 and SCE2.
A new allele of SCE1 has been characterized. The encoded protein has an altered C-terminal sequence which confers no change in activity on the wild-type allele. The SCE1 allele from a yeast strain in which the wild-type SCE1 allele is knocked out is able to complement a growth defect on a media lacking the base lesion 8-oxoguanine. This suggests that the SCE1 product may be deleterious in a nonautonomous manner. Complementation of the SCE2 and RAD3 mutations is also studied. We conclude that the SCE1 and SCE2 proteins are not necessary for chromosome stability, but that their products have deleterious effects. The SCE1/2 allele of RAD3 is defective in complementation of an sru9 mutation that confers resistance to methyl methanesulfonate.Archives

A long time ago, in a post entitled “Sarcasm: A Love Story”, I looked at a couple of issues that I had as children when I first heard the famous “duck and cover” tale. You remember that one, “duck and cover” was the name of the story about the power of speech. Back then it was a scary enough tale about how one little boy was not allowed to speak while his family was being bombed.
This time we look at a second version of “duck and cover” for another little boy who wanted to tell the world that the house was on fire. Instead he was told to duck down and cover his ears.
Now, the name of this tale is really “Duck and Cover” – not “Duck and Cover your ears”. So, while it is a great moral tale, I really wonder why we would name it this way. Perhaps we could blame it on some bad editing of early Disney cartoons where the kids wanted to be brave and asked a mouse what to do. Well, here it is:
